How Do I Talk to My Child About PTSD?
Start with honesty, not fear.
Explain that PTSD isn't because Daddy or Mommy doesn't love them. It's an injury from things they experienced that can affect their mind and emotions.
Use age-appropriate language.
Younger children don't need every detail. They need reassurance that they are loved and safe.
Answer the questions they actually ask.
It's okay to say, "I don't know," or, "Let's pray about that together."
Remind them what never changes.
PTSD may affect behavior, but it doesn't change God's love for your family or a parent's love for their child.
Teach them healthy ways to respond.
Instead of feeling responsible for fixing their parent, encourage them to pray, show love, and tell a trusted adult if they're scared.
End with hope.
Healing is often a journey. Families don't have to walk it alone, and God walks with them every step of the way.
